Fader is an application that was developed to address the need to connect venues and DJs.

The challenge

Hiring a DJ is a very rudimentary and lengthy process. Currently, there is no digital platform where you can hire DJs on a regular basis. There are apps like Meetup, where you might be able to, but their main purpose is different.

The problem

I researched, interviewed users, and used surveys to understand how the process actually works. And I identified three main problems:

  • It's all about connections. If you don't know anyone, it's very difficult to get a chance as a DJ.

  • Chaos: As a bar manager, scheduling is done by calling/WhatsApping/emailing each DJ individually. This is a waste of time. Furthermore, if a DJ doesn't show up at the last minute, the bar has very little time to find a replacement.

  • The payment process is done manually, which creates uncertainty for the DJ.

User personas

1. The owner of the venue who frequently hires DJs.

  • It is troublesome to have to contact each DJ individually when scheduling sessions.
  • Is concerned that the venue doesn't fill up.
  • There are times, such as in summer time, when it is difficult to find available DJs.

2. The semi-expert DJ: occasionally DJs for fun and gets paid for it.

  • Finds it frustrating to have to manage his availability every weekend, as it takes up his time.
  • Is concerned that when the session ends, he will not be paid the agreed amount.

3. Aspiring DJ: the music enthusiast who would like to play in bars but has not yet been able to do so because they encounter many difficulties when trying.

  • Has no contacts and there is a lot of competition.
  • Face-to-face networking takes too much effort.
